Why Should I Replace a Missing Tooth?

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Studies show that 97% of dental implant placements happen without any complications. However, like any surgery, some risk is involved in the dental implant procedure. At Galleria Dental Aesthetics, our Northern Virginia implant dentists take great care to minimize any risk to your health and safety. Nonetheless, we believe patients should be fully aware of all potential complications prior to undergoing any surgical procedure.

Integration Risks

The biggest risk with dental implants is that they will not integrate into your jawbone. When placed, dental implants need to be accepted by your body as part of your jaw. This is a process known as osseointegration. If this process is unsuccessful, your dental implant may cause damage to surrounding tissue. It may also become loose and fall out. When this happens, most often a simple reinsertion is enough to solve the problem.

The risk of osseointegration failure is a major reason why dental implant candidates must be evaluated to ensure they have sufficient bone tissue to hold a dental implant. Other factors may also increase the risk of having dental implants, so talk to the Virginia implant dentists at Galleria Dental Aesthetics first to find out if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Tissue Damage and Infection

Dental implants may cause irritation to your gum tissue or blood vessels in your gums. This can lead to inflammation, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth. In addition, dental implants have, in very rare instances, caused sinus problems.

Some patients have also experienced nerve damage in the jaw. This damage can lead to pain or numbness in the teeth, lips, mouth, and chin. Again, this is an extremely rare complication and happens only in the most complicated cases.

Dental implants are a safe and effective way to replace missing teeth. While not without its risks and complications, implant placement remains the best option for many of our patients. If you still have concerns our Virginia implant dentists can answer any of your remaining questions about dental implants.

Are the Doctors at Galleria Dental Aesthetics Trained in Implant Dentistry?

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

At Galleria Dental Aesthetics, Dr. Chong Lee and Dr. Joseph Oh are qualified implant dentists with over twenty years of experience. Both of these dentists received their post doctorate training at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), and have devoted invaluable time towards additional training and further education.

Dr. Chong Lee received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1983. He has completed many additional hours of training in cosmetic dentistry and neuromuscular dentistry at LVI. So impressive is his dedication and performance at LVI that he now holds the title of Regional Director, and is highly esteemed throughout the dental community.

Dr. Joseph Oh graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1983. Like Dr. Lee, Dr. Oh went on to receive advanced degrees in cosmetic dentistry and neuromuscular dentistry at LVI. His commitment to both aesthetic and functional dentistry led the nonprofit consumer information resource, Consumers’ Checkbook, to award him “area’s top dentist” in 2005.

Both of our Virginia implant dentists have the training and experience to successfully place dental implants to replace missing teeth. However, it is their devotion to the satisfaction and safety of our patients that truly make them stand out as qualified implant dentists.

What Are Dental Implants Made of?

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots inserted directly into your jawbone to provide support for a porcelain crown. This procedure is fast becoming most popular for replacing missing teeth because of its distinct advantages over other forms of tooth replacement.

To provide a permanent solution for missing teeth, dental implants need to be made of nearly indestructible material. Today, implant dentists use high-strength titanium for all implants.

Why Titanium?

Titanium is a nontoxic metal that is 40% lighter than steel and 60% stronger than aluminum. Titanium is fracture resistant and provides superior strength. Best of all, in 97% of implant placements, the titanium implant is readily accepted by your jaw in a process known as osseointegration.

The process for placing a dental implant is relatively short, but osseointegration can take up to six months. During this time, your dental implant is becoming a part of your jaw without damaging the surrounding soft tissue. Full healing is necessary to ensure your dental implant stays permanently anchored to support the porcelain replacement for your missing tooth.

Once the bone has healed, a titanium post is attached to the dental implant and your Virginia cosmetic dentist restores it with a custom-made porcelain crown. This crown is colored and shaped to exactly match your natural teeth and, if cared for properly, can provide a seamless smile for a lifetime.
