Why do my Ears Ring when my Teeth Hurt?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

The perception of ringing, buzzing or humming in the ears is known as tinnitus. Tinnitus is not actually a disease but instead an indication of conditions in other parts of the body. Pain in your teeth accompanied by tinnitus may be a sign of TMJ.

TMJ disorders are associated with the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your jaw bone and temporal bone. These disorders are commonly referred to as TMJ or TMD. The symptoms of TMJ include limited jaw movement, clicking or popping when chewing, and pain in the jaw, face, neck, or around the ears. There are a number of different causes of TMJ, as well as several options for TMJ treatment.

Ear ringing as a symptom of TMJ can occur when excessive pressure is placed on the TMJ and muscles connected to it. This pressure often comes from jaw clenching and tooth grinding that is associated with a misaligned bite. Clenching and grinding can also cause your teeth to hurt.

If you think you might be experiencing the symptoms of TMJ and you live in McLean, Virginia, please contact the experienced dentists at Galleria Dental Aesthetics to schedule a consultation

How Often Do Dental Bridges Need to be Replaced?

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Knowing when to replace a dental bridge depends on when the dental bridge becomes weakened or damaged from wear, or if an infection or decay develops around the dental bridge. There is no certain amount of time in which a dental bridge should be replaced. If a dental bridge is properly cared for, including good oral hygiene and dental visits twice yearly, dental bridges can last many years. The lifespan of dental bridges tends to be from 7 to 15 years, but can also be 30 or more years.

It is important to treat your dental bridge just as you would natural teeth, visiting the dentist for regular cleanings and practicing good oral hygiene. These habits can greatly extend the lifespan of your dental bridge. Although, even with good oral hygiene, dental bridges can still become cracked or chipped, which would require replacement of the dental bridge. Another reason that dental bridges are replaced is due to cementation issues, when the material used to adhere the bridge to your teeth fails.

If you have a dental bridge that may need to be replaced, or to learn more about dental bridges, please contact the experienced McLean dentists at Galleria Dental Aesthetics to schedule a consultation.
